Another blast from the past today. May 2004 again.
A Kentish farmer with 4,500 acres of arable crops and 20,000 free-range hens and a flock of sheep, wanted to cut his diesel bill.
Being close to the rapidly growing town of Ashford, plenty of restaurants and takeaways are around. The farmer seized the opportunity and went into business collecting the waste cooking oil and turning it into biodiesel and selling the surplus. Now, he is the good guy.
Enter the bad guy. Tesco’s partner Greenenergy has revealed that work on Britains first biodiesel plant to process up to 100,000 tonnes of home-grown virgin rapeseed oil a year.
Oilseed rape has many food uses both for humans and animals. What right does anybody have to take food from the mouth of others for profit?
Use waste material to make diesel, fine. But, don’t turn Britain into an oilseed rape mono culture for profit. Not only that but oilseed rape is smelly as it is a member of the cabbage family and is also the ‘kiss of death’ to hayfever suffers.
