This is presumed to be because of pollution. (please see my article). You may well have seen or heard this frightening news. Is there a solution to their problem? Not in the near future I fear. The diet of coastal dwelling Inuit depends on blubber from seals. Seals eat fish. Fish eat plankton and detritis, plankton eat smaller plankton ……. and so on. The culprets in this case are PCB’s many from burning plastic. In the UK our legislation now has caused greated precautions to be taken with industries like waste incineration. They use stringent pollution control and burn waste at an extremely high temperature which breaks up PCB’s to harmless chemicals. We have little to fear, but that is not so for any of the Arctic populations particularly the coastal dwellers.

This raises a number of obvious questions.

1. Does it matter that more girls are born than boys?

2. Is there anything we can do to help?

3. Do we need to be concerned about PCB’s in our environment?
