Eco-awareness is increasing almost daily in the world of business, with more and more organizations making huge efforts to ‘go green’ within the office. A relatively simple step towards this result is to simply replace the furniture.
A readily available, easy to source, renewable substance is wheatboard, a by-product made from wheat straw. As a waste product, it would ordinarily have been burned or been disposed of in landfill sites. Used as a construction material however, it offers immense environmental benefits:
As a feasible substitute for wood, it reduces the need for deforestation, thereby saving trees
More space in landfill sites is left available for other waste.
Because it is no longer being burnt, there will be a significant reduction in air pollution by the emission of toxic gases into the atmosphere
No formaldehyde is used during its manufacture – formaldehyde is a known irritant of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin and asthmatics can be particularly susceptible to its effects.
Wheatboard is manufactured in sheet form and has a demonstrated record of its versatility and durability. It is easily machined and shaped. It may be drilled and plugged, sealed, varnished and painted. Its uses are manifold, although it performs especially well in the manufacture of commercial and office furniture. High quality wheatboard cabinetry and desking are to be found in several of America’s colleges, universities and technological centres.
Wheatboard manufacturers are apt to be found in the USA or Canada but a search on line will reveal who the producers of eco friendly furniture are, including office desks and workstations together with filing cabinets and bookcases.
Occasionally, we have only to look literally beneath our feet for environmentally sound solutions to our needs. With the availability of wheat straw and wheat board, nature has blessed us with a wonderful and practical formula for being ‘green’ in both our offices and every day lives .
