And that will also save you money!

While taking long showers, we don’t think about all the water that is being used. A low flow showerheads does drastically reduce the quantity of water you consumption while you enjoy a long shower, yet still provides you with a very nice shower experience.

Flow rates for normal, code complying shower heads are 3 gallons per minute. These are not water conserving shower heads. Some manufacturers sell low flow showerheads with flowrates as low as 0.5 gpm. You can always shorten the shower time, on top of installing low flow shower head.

Showers count for about 20-30% of the total water consumed in a typical home. Let’s assume your yearly water/sewer bill is maybe $400 and you have 2 showers in your place with standard heads. You are possibly spending up to $120 every year on taking showers, in addition to the cost to heat the water. If you calculate the amount of water consumed for four 10-minute showers each day, it comes to 43,800 gallons, based on normal showerheads. A low flow shower head can cut your water/sewer bill by around $40 a year. This doesn’t sound like much. Your gas, electric, oil bills will also be reduced.

Most low flow shower heads can and do give the same experience as regular showerheads. Some low flow showerheads, those that simply limit the flow of water, will probably take away the fun of taking long showers. Some parents might like this if they just cannot get their teen out of the shower. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lengthy shower every so often myself. Long showers are one of the biggest reason for high water consumption.

Oxygenation is one of the techniques applied in some low flow showerheads. Oxygenated shower heads add air to the water stream to cause a feeling of taking a great shower.

Installing water conserving showerheads ususally has a 1-2 year payback, depending on the sort of low flow shower head you install and on the cost for water/sewer in your area. This payback time is likely to be lower and your savings will be higher as the cost of water/sewer increases.

Let’s not forget the big picture. It is becoming a problem in many areas to always have enough clean water to drink for everybody. Not just the Southwest and other arid areas are experiencing water shortages.

We we cannot delay: we must start to reduce water usage now.Replacing inefficient high flow showerheads with low flow shower heads saves precious water and money.
