Hi Anne,

I believe the report on wind's supposed unreliability was overblown, if you will pardon a poor pun. Most utility power systems rely on a mix of resources to ensure reliability. The coal plant you mention may have been fired up to bail out the nuclear plant, but presumably it ran for only a short period of time and emitted a modest amount of greenhouse gases. The same is true for wind power. It matches up well with gas-fired power. A system in the UK, which has a generally excellent wind resource, should use relatively little fuel and produce low emissions with a mix of wind and gas.

I sure wish we could get indoor smoking banned in St. Louis, Missouri. It would be nice to hear music in a club without inhaling all that junk. Our outdoor air is bad in the summers, also: ozone and allergens, thanks to cars and flowers. Even the flowers have it in for us, it seems. Every rose has its cloud, perhaps, even if those clouds have silver linings.

Thanks for the report. Jim

Absolutely right. Our cheap goods, of all kinds, are often at an unseen cost. How many air miles has all that fruit - Chilean apples, American grapefruit - done? Kiwi fruit uses more than its own weight in aviation fuel to get here from NZ. And how much are the grape-pickers or coffee-growers paid? Far too often we enjoy low costs at the expense of pollution and poverty elsewhere.
