Chief executive Obama has an chance to be a real chief and make a immediate impact on the general public’s disappointment about the Gulf oil spill and U.S. real estate market. He could use his oratorical skills to change the energy debate in this country, and help Americans see the need to clearly move away from the older energy sources that are wasteful and encourage more lasting and less expensive home building. Even though the oil spill was a devastating event it could be used to encourage a silver lining. With the environmental devastation caused by this spill combined with the outcry from the public media more attention and concern towards environmental issues are increasing consciousness and demanding attention and action to be taken. The question is whether America will decide to do things differently or if this will be faded out by the next big story. This could be maybe encouraged more by our leadership. In particular, President Obama could use this opportunity to sway the start drilling crowd who ordinarily seems to scream the loudest in to a more conservative method. The devastation to local tourism and seafood markets was incredible and few barrels that were achieved hardly will have a effect on our future reliance on oil. Just previously the gulf oil spill, a Gallup poll stated that Americans were presently less anxious about a series of environmental issues than at any time in the past 20 years. Probably now this tragedy will at least raise the public’s concern for the present ecological issues. This summer, Congress will discuss the American Power Act, a comprehensive energy and climate change legislation recently introduced to the Senate. This legislation proposes a carbon tax to help wean us off fossil fuels and has considerable monies allocated for nuclear power and clean coal technology, and the incentives for even more offshore drilling. Similiarly the U.S. government should increase the tax credits for sustainable home building by offering more incentives to builders offset building cost and to present homeowners who upgrade their Home to be much more energy efficient. If householders are not allocating as very much towards their power expenditures would it not adhere that they may be prepared to pay additional for a future home?

Solar Photovoltaic panel subsidy likely to end soon warns Solartwin, the Uk zero carbon solar panels.

Solartwin Zero Carbon Solar Panels sent me this warning letter. (I have one of their solar water heaters, it’s excellent)

A UK government funding collapse leading to a crash cut in solar electric panels PV subsidy called the Feed in Tariff (FIT) is looking increasingly possible, following the emergence of:

(a) numerous start-up companies offering free PV installations (in return for 25 years of subsidy!) and now

(b) the impending large scale development of many massive solar farms in Cornwall emptying the government’s coffers rather suddenly.
Just look at the huge scale of these planned new PV solar farms. First look at the scale of a domestic scale PV installation. This is usually 1, 2 3 or 4 kWp in size. (at a typical cost of £6.5k to £18.5k). But a typical commercial, FIT-subsidised PV farm can be 5000 kWp.

Such a PV farm is over 1000 times bigger than a domestic PV installation.

These huge new solar fields will soak up subsidy so fast that there will soon be little or even none left at all (welcome to the regular story of start-stop government green energy subsidy). They all need planning permission and there are are said to be about 85 planning permissions in progress for giant scale 5000 kWp (aka 5MWp) FiT PV farms. 25 of these are located in Cornwall, which is the sunniest part of UK.

If they are built in 2011, they will suck up virtually ALL of the remaining allocated budget for FIT’s.

The Treasury is rumoured to be VERY concerned and to be watching VERY closely.

Therefore an almost immediate FIT review may happen – perhaps as early as spring 2011.

According to the Financial Times, latecomers to the Feed in Tariff (FIT) could lose out as rates are cut according to the FT 6-7 November 2010′s longer paper print version of this story:

Financial Times opinion: Latecomers to the Feed In Tariff “could lose out”
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/79d4bb38-e8e9-11df-a383-00144feab49a.html?ftcamp=rss#axzz14pH2ebTJ

Government had already announced that FITs will be reviewed in 2012, a year ahead of their original schedule, unless “higher than expected deployment” required an early review. The Government has also already identified scope to cut FIT costs by 10 per cent. Will that be all?

Go for solar today order your peak rate FIT subsidised solar PV panels from Solartwin now!

And buy with confidence. If your feed in tariff drops by over 20% between the date of your order and the date that we agree to start your installation, then you can abandon your order completely and get a 100% refund (This offer is made on top of your normal retail consumer rights: it does not diminish them). So no worries.

For reliable installers of solar panels for over a decade – choose Solartwin today. Don’t miss the boat!

Solar Twin Ltd have always been justified in their warnings about possible subsidy cuts over the years. I do hope that we are very, very wrong this time. Please call me on 0845 1300 137 if you want to discuss solar.

Carbon Trading. Shower Police, Goodbye

Carbon trading has been a way for rich countries to buy the right to pollute from the poor countries. The G8 governments would not agree with this but this is the essence in a nutshell.

Not happy with this, we are likely to have to face this in our own neighbourhoods. I can envisage ’Shower Police’ knock ing at my door instead of Mormons. Shower Police would inspect home to check if the bath had been used when you have traded X Litres of water. Well now, before the police knock on my door, I’m signing off - for good.

When I started this blog people didn’t believe that Climate Change was happening. That has changed so I shall find a happy topic to blog about. So it’s good bye and good luck to the thousands of you who have visited my blog.

First, an apology for the silence. My ADSL link has been down. Yes thanks, it’s back again now but the main phone is out!

Anyway, back to the point of today’s post. Concerning the choice of ‘Super Nanny’ from Alaska who has been installed as the running mate for the Republicans. Great I thought, what a woman! Then I remembered a news release I read the other day. Now I wonder if all is what it appears, or is this laudable act really smoothing the path to purchase the rape of “The Last Wilderness” for oil. If anyone wants to start a “FREE ALASKA” campaign, I’ll join because I have seen her true beauty. At least if PowerTune was adopted worldwide, Alaska might stand more of a chance. A copy of the press release follows. It’s quite long, but worth taking time to read.

PRESS/SOCIAL MEDIA RELEASE
RAN Sells-Out Canadian Boreal Forests

- Rainforest Action Network greenwashes destruction of half of
Ontario, Canada’s boreal forests; despite lack of any detail
regarding vague promised protections, and without scientific
findings that doing so is ecologically sufficient

August 28, 2008
By Earth News, a project of Ecological Internet
Dr. Glen Barry, +1 (920) 776-1075

(Earth) — Rainforest Action Network (RAN) of San Francisco
has long been one of America’s leading rainforest campaign
organizations. Yet in July their campaign to protect Ontario,
Canada’s boreal forests doomed half this vital global
ecological system to industrial destruction. In return, RAN
and other proponents received vague promises of protections
over a decade from now, but no protected area boundaries or
protection plans.

Canada’s boreal forests are home to hundreds of sensitive
species of animals including polar bears, caribou and
wolverines. Boreal forests are some of the world’s largest
carbon storehouses, with holdings equal to decades of global
emissions from fossil fuels, while continually absorbing new
emissions. The boreal region is also the world’s largest
reservoir of clean fresh water.

“Just how much longer do you think environmentalists can
strike deals that give up half of large wilderness ecosystems
to industrial development for vague promises of protection?
Simply, more ecologically attuned folks know no more natural
habitats can be lost and expect to survive climate change,”
explains Ecological Internet’s President, Dr. Glen Barry.

Neither RAN, WWF or even Greenpeace realize that there is no
longer any acceptable reason to industrially destroy or
diminish an intact natural ecosystem — not if falsely FSC
certified, not to briefly alleviate poverty, and not because
indigenous people are in favor. The state of the Earth is so
grim, and the needs to protect and restore natural ecosystem
so large, that only sufficient campaigns seeking to end
industrial cutting and burning are worthwhile any longer. The
rest is greenwash.

It is unknown if 50 percent protection — of unknown strength
and placement — will be enough to fully sustain Ontario’s
biodiversity and ecosystem services. Future protections will
likely center on the sparsely populated and largely
unthreatened northern boreal, while with its promotion and
endorsement of the vague plan, RAN has greenwashed intensified
forestry and mining in the already heavily fragmented southern
boreal.

“The only meaningful forest protection is to work to keep all
ancient primary forests standing, and to meet needs for forest
products from secondary forests regenerating into old-growth.
There is no chance of achieving global ecological
sustainability until ecological destruction ends, what remains
is fully protected, and restoration begins,” explains Dr.
Barry.

in recent history — the other being
in British Columbia, Canada’s priceless Great Bear temperate
rainforest — that RAN has been a driving force in continuing
industrial loss of the world’s most important remaining large,
intact forest wildernesses. Greenwashing millions of acres of
industrial wilderness destruction in the name of indigenous
rights is not doing these people or the environment any
favors. Thankfully, RAN now does little tropical rainforest
campaigning, so they may be safe. With more victories like
this, soon there will be no ancient forests or an operable
climate.

RAN’s slide from a force for forest good to a force for forest
greenwash must not go unchallenged. This is particularly
difficult for Ecological Internet, as President Dr. Glen Barry
is a RAN rainforest award recipient, and has worked
collaboratively with them for decades. Yet RAN’s string of
blunders — also including occupying campaign offices of Al
Gore to protest oil investments (which Nader also had),
possibly swinging the 2000 election — cannot be forgotten nor
forgiven, particularly while ill-informed appeasement
continues. RAN has censored those questioning these policies
on their blog.

Dr. Barry laments, “You can’t present yourselves as cutting
edge, selfless and knowledgeable forest protestors and be
routinely cutting deals to turn over millions of acres of
ancient forests to fatcat loggers and minders. We need to
focus on how many ecosystems are necessary to maintain the
Earth’s habitability, and reaching these levels of protection
and restoration, not upon what can be indelicately and easily
negotiated.

RAN is called upon to get on board protecting all ancient
forests and working to restore mature, old-growth forests; or
they, like so much of the mainstream environmental movement,
are part of the climate and biodiversity crises. “Giving up on
half of Canada’s boreal forests for a pocket full is mumbles
is not the role of the Rainforest Action Network, members or
donors. They have no authority or expertise to be pursuing
such deals.”

###ENDS###

forest and climate policy. Ecological Internet provides the

Lately the world has gone even crazier than usual.

Some County in Minnesota is going to disband it’s Police Force to save money!?!?

Poland that has been invaded more than any other European Country because it is flat and slap bang in the middle of the continent so trouble comes from all sides. So how are they going to fight the credit crunch? By cutting their defence budget, of course!

Orlando, Florida. 39 bus routes are to to face cuts. So, how will people have to travel? Use cars more or walk. In a land built for a minimum of four wheels each, you could die of starvation walking to a shop. I know, I tried walking there, but gave up and hired a car.

Next to save costs Mr Bush is cutting the Science budget, presumably so he can have his country continue fighting everyone else’s war. Not the defence side of this budget, but the area that did atmospheric research to try to find ways of helping the world’s poorest nations fight climate change.

China has had to take cars off the road to fight pollution because of the Olympic Games. This means that the people who were disposessed and given no compensation because their homes were in the way of the stadium, can sleep in the open and actually see the stars for the first time in years.

David and Goliath have taken up arms and Israel is coming in on David’s side. Doesn’t Israel have enough trouble at home without mixing it on Georgia’s side against mighty Russia.

And who is just round the corner? Poland who is cutting its defense budget!

But, what I am certain of is that spending a little on a Powertune energy saver will save a lot of money and energy. At least something is reliable and makes sense in the world. today.
