About 3 weeks ago there was a report saying that wind turbines were inefficient and liable to breakdown.

In the Times of 10th July there is a report headed “British Energy Nuclear Power Output Slides” Evidently nuclear power output fell by 17% during the second quarter. There was a glitch at Sizewell ‘B’ nuclear power station in May. This triggered blackouts that hit up to 500,000 homes. At least I know what caused those blackouts now.

So how was the gap in supply plugged? By getting Eggborough COAL fired power station to ramp up production. At least we had hot water from our solar panel.

What means of generating electricity can we use if both wind and nuclear power are unreliable?

Ah well, the Govenment have sold yet another piece of the family silver! On 23rd April I wrote about the fact that our nuclear power industry was virtually up for grabs. Well, the Russians didn’t get the contract. (After last night’s programme on the aftermath at Chernobil thank heavens they didn’t).

The prize goes to jointly to E.ON, the major German Utility giant, Arvena the French nuclear power group and German engineering firm Siemens. The French will collaberate with the Germans on R&D. Lets hope this alliance works within the ethos of the EC and not like the previous time when the 3 countries met on far less favourable terms.

Don’t forget to follow the link through to purchase a PowerTune Energy Saver, reduce the demand for electricity and save a nuclear power station being built near you!

It seem odd to me that after watching a TV programme on the decommissioning of Calder Hall, the world beating nuclear reactor that was a British ‘First’, that this is yet another race we have lost.

Partly because of the ‘nibmby’ attitude of the prospective neighbours to alternative energy generation systems we have played back into the arms of the nuclear industry. It would not be quite such a bitter pill if it was the UK that was going to build these reactors. But, NO, France, Germany and even Spain are in the running, no mention of the UK!

Never mind I expect Russia will put in a bid next week anyway.

You can still do your bit by using POWERTUNEEnergySaver. This is a ‘plug n play’ gizmo that will save you up to 25% on your electricity bill without any effort, ROI 3-6 months. PowerTune comes from Malasia. At least the have UK plugs as standard!

This is because of an acute shortage of staff 40% retiring in the next 10 years. Surely they knew this would happen? What ever happened to forward planning? (My comment)

Documents seen by TheTimes show that some of the group’s programmes to train staff to “Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel” level – a benchmark industry training standard set by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate are to be trimmed from 18 months to 9 months.

On 28th November British Energy unveiled plans to build a new generation of UK nuclear power stations.

The full story appeared in The Times of 29th November 2007
