Osmosis, bring back memories of school anyone?

I learned about osmosis the hard way. When I was a child we went for a countyside picnic. Thisbright spark thought it would be a good idea to put salt in the sandwiches before we left. This, I thought would save the lettuce in them getting squashed. WRONG! the lettuce was soggy and disgusting. That is how I learned about osmosis. The salt dissolved in the moisture of the surface of the lettuce and drew out the purer water from inside the lettuce leaf. Result – that soggy mess. The strong solution (salt) had passed through the semi-permeable membrane *(Leaf surface) into the weak solution inside the leaf. * for semi-permeable, think of a cheap raincoat that lets through half the rain water!

That’s the lesson finished for today. Norway has come up with a way to use the ’soggy lettuce’ method, osmosis to generate free electricity. Early days, but at least they aren’ sitting on their backsides doing nothing like some ‘developed ‘nations. Want to read more?

Carbon Trading. Shower Police, Goodbye

Carbon trading has been a way for rich countries to buy the right to pollute from the poor countries. The G8 governments would not agree with this but this is the essence in a nutshell.

Not happy with this, we are likely to have to face this in our own neighbourhoods. I can envisage ’Shower Police’ knock ing at my door instead of Mormons. Shower Police would inspect home to check if the bath had been used when you have traded X Litres of water. Well now, before the police knock on my door, I’m signing off - for good.

When I started this blog people didn’t believe that Climate Change was happening. That has changed so I shall find a happy topic to blog about. So it’s good bye and good luck to the thousands of you who have visited my blog.

For 24 hours only: Donate to support our campaign against global warming and your gift will be matched $2-to-$1, so every dollar you donate means $3 will go to stop global warming.

Dear Friend,

We’re in the fight of our lives to stop climate change before it’s too late.
Donate now to our $2-for-$1 Summer Match Campaign and your gift will be tripled to help fight global warming.
America faces an historic choice.

We can either listen to the big polluters and the obstructionist protectors of the status quo who would endanger all or our futures.

Or we can lead the world in taking on the climate crisis and unleashing a clean energy future.

That’s what it comes down to as we fight for climate action this year.

The going quite frankly is tough and success is far from assured.

That’s why two of our most committed supporters, Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham, through their Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, have offered to match your online donation $2-for-$1.

For the next 24 hours, for every $1 you donate, $3 will go toward our global warming campaign to win climate action this year.

We need your help to fight off the deep-pocketed climate action opponents — among them big polluters and the ideological right. They are spending hundreds of millions to scare the public and their elected officials.

They are actually trying to convince people that global warming is not a reality.

Tell that to the mother polar bear grieving over lost cubs.

…Or the maple tappers of Vermont whose livelihood depends on healthy sugar maples – trees especially vulnerable in a warming climate.

…Or to the impoverished millions who eke out a marginal existence on coastal lowlands that may be flooded in a matter of years.

This is the fight of our lives. It’s why we are devoting our own time and resources as never before to mobilize public support for action through grassroots organizing, Internet outreach, TV and radio spots as well as deploying many of the best scientific and economic minds to forge solutions that work.

It’s why we join President Obama in calling for urgent action this year to stop global warming pollution, and begin in earnest to transform our nation’s energy economy.

Please make an urgent donation today, and remember every $1 you donate TODAY means $3 in urgently needed funds to stop climate change.

Please act now before it’s too late for the earth, and for our children.

Sincerely,

Fred Krupp
President

P.S. Scientists believe that global warming could doom a third or more of all species on the planet by the end of the century. We must act now.

Please donate now to our $2-for-$1 Summer Match campaign and your gift will go three-times as far in supporting our fight against global warming.

Exciting news from Wales. Blue Ice, a new supercomputer has been unveiled at Pembroke Dock Swansea. Prof. Tavi Murray, a leading glaciologist, is the team leader. NB. The article refers to Prof Murray as both Him & Her. If any Welsh speakers are reading this, can you tell us if ‘Tavi’ is a male or female christian name, please? Thanks.

Prof Murray said: “With many glaciers experiencing rapid thinning, time is of the essence in discovering the effects of these drastic changes.

It will allow researchers to convert vast amounts of scientific data on temperatures in thousands of locations into meaningful images, leading to better interpretation of the results.

According to the university, the icing on the cake is that the computer’s operation has also been specifically designed to be energy efficient.

Blue Ice is housed in a new “green” data centre and boasts energy efficient computer processing units which provide high performance computing within a small carbon footprint.

The computer, the latest from the series of IBM “blue” series, one of the first of which defeated Kasparov in 1997, can now make two trillion calculations per second.

Surrounded by a spectacular visualisation suite, the surprisingly small supercomputer will try to help Welsh scientists understand one of the most worrying modern climate trends: the thinning of polar ice sheets.

To read the full article please visit BLUE ICE

PS. Blue ice is the term given to the ice which is melting at the toe of a glacier. This ice appears blue. I’ll try to hunt out a picture for you.
